The institute was founded in 1992 with a mandate to perform application-oriented basic research in the field of interaction of radiation with matter. The focus is on understanding the underlying principles of physical and chemical interaction processes leading to its core competencies of modifying, fabricating and characterizing ultra-precise and functional surfaces and thin films using ion, electron, laser and plasma technologies. Transfer of the thus-developed knowledge and sustainable processes in economically relevant fields of technology is a central task of the institute’s research and development.
