You Are Here: New Science Prize Rewards Outstanding Research for Sustainable Developments
Starting 2012, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is awarding the Sustainable Developments Research Award within the framework of the German Sustainability Award. Researchers, who are make great contributions to sustainable developments with their projects, are distinguished in a competition, Federal minister Annette Schavan will award the prizes in December 2012.
The Science Year Project Earth: Our Future steers the focus to how strongly our researchers advance sustainable development nationally and internationally. We want to honor particularly successful research projects on sustainability with the new prize - and link them more closely with involvement from municipalities and companies.

The focus of the new award is on scientific contributions to the national sustainability strategy and the high tech strategy in the fields of climate protection, resource protection, and energy, for example projects in the context of the BMBF framework program, FONA Research for Sustainable Developments.
After the Science Year 2012 Project Eart: Our Future was established, the BMBF determined annual thematic focuses with the new award. In 2012 researchers or research teams will be honored, who advance Sustainability made in germany. The call for proposals is aligned towards application oriented research projects, that are suitable for maintaining and expanding Germany’s position as a leader in technology in the areas of climate, energy, resources, environmental technologies, and sustainable business management.
Individual researchers or research groups from German research institutions, universities, and universities of applied sciences can apply till August 31, 2012. The Federal Minister of Research, Annette Schavan will award the science prize on December 7, 2012, during the award ceremony for the German Sustainability Award.
The German Sustainability Award will be awarded for the fifth time in 2012 to companies and for the first time to cities and communities as well. The Stiftung Deutscher Nachhaltigkeitspreis e.V. in collaboration with the federal government, the German Council for Sustainable Development, municipal umbrella organizations, economic associations, civil society organizations, and research institutions all sponsor this award.
