The ’Breeding Research’ Research Group develops new, innovative methods for breeding resistant, high-quality varieties for a sustainable and locally adapted agricultural sector.

Together with other researchers you will develop principles for Agroscope’s Plant Breeding programme. The focus here is on data-analysis developments, quantitative genetic methods and genomics as well as on exploiting synergies between breeding and agroecological approaches ("system approach").

About us

In the ’Plant Breeding’ Research Division, practical new wheat, soybean, fodder plant and fruit varieties are bred and the new traits and breeding tools required for this are researched and developed. New varieties must be economically successful, be capable of being cultivated in an environmentally friendly manner, and must deliver a high-quality product.

Agroscope is the Swiss federal centre of excellence for research in the agriculture and food sector. Its researchers work at a number of sites in Switzerland. Headquartered in Bern-Liebefeld (as of 2026: Posieux), Agroscope is attached to the Swiss Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research EAER.

Ihre Aufgaben

  • Planning, management and execution of projects for developing new biostatistical and quantitative-genetic methods for efficient plant breeding
  • Acquisition, planning and management of third-party-funded projects
  • Analysis and publication of comprehensive genetic and phenotypic data
  • Supporting Agroscope breeders in the application of research findings in their breeding programmes
  • Managing and supervising postdoctoral, PhD, Master’s and Bachelor’s students

Ihr Profil

  • Highly motivated scientist with a PhD in Statistics, Biostatistics, Plant Breeding or a related field
  • Sound knowledge of biostatistics, esp. in plant breeding and its quantitative-genetic principles
  • Competent in recording, analysing and interpreting scientific datasets (including statistical programming)
  • Achievement-oriented, outgoing personality with excellent teamwork skills
  • Knowledge of two official Swiss languages and a very good command of written and spoken English
