The working groups at the Max Planck Institute for Neurological Research focus on natural and pathological changes in the brain. These include neurological illnesses such as strokes and cancers, for example brain tumours, all of which are intensely researched here. In addition, the neurologists at the Institute also work on cognitive processes and crucial issues such as: what happens in the brain during mental activities like thinking, deciding or problem solving? In order to be able to flexibly and completely answer such questions, researchers collaborate with each other and deliberately make use of the local synergies, including those with the Medical Faculty of the University of Cologne and the Klaus Joachim Zülch Laboratories of the Max Planck Society.
