It is jointly performed by Technische Universität München (TUM, Munich) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU, Singapore). This is a highly interdisciplinary international research effort, combining expertise from several institutes from TUM and NTU aiming at the development of innovative technologies and future transportation concepts matching the challenging requirements of fast growing and changing tropical megacities.

One aspect towards realizing that goal is the development of modular battery packs. Small
micropacks consisting of a smaller number of battery cells will allow plug-and-play energy
storage systems that can be quickly adapted to different electric cars. The applicant will be
tasked with designing such a micropack architecture in coordination with other members of the
battery storage engineering research group at TUM CREATE, with a focus on a robust
mechanical construction able to withstand various electrical and mechanical stresses as well as
attempts of tampering and battery misuse. Other tasks include performing mechanical safety
calculations, developing a battery pack mechanical testing methodology and conducting these
tests on prototype battery packs.

The position is available starting March 2012.
