TUM CREATE is a research program sponsored by the Singaporean National Research Foundation (NRF). It is jointly performed by Technische Universität München (TUM, Munich) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU, Singapore). This is a highly interdisciplinary international research effort, combining expertise from several institutes from TUM and NTU aiming at the development of innovative technologies and future transportation concepts matching the challenging requirements of fast growing and changing tropical megacities.
One aspect towards realizing that goal is the development of modular battery packs. Small micropacks consisting of a smaller number of battery cells will allow plug-and-play energy storage systems that can be quickly adapted to different electric cars. The applicant will be tasked with designing such a micropack architecture in coordination with other members of the battery storage engineering research group at TUM CREATE, with a focus on a robust mechanical construction able to withstand various electrical and mechanical stresses as well as attempts of tampering and battery misuse. Other tasks include performing mechanical safety calculations, developing a battery pack mechanical testing methodology and conducting these tests on prototype battery packs. The position is available starting March 2012. The candidate will be able to earn his PhD at TUM in the course of the project, supervised by Prof. Dr. Andreas Jossen of the institute of electrical energy storage systems (EES) of TUM. Requirements: ; Excellent Master or Diploma degree in the field of mechanical engineering, automotive engineering or related fields ; Experience in mechanical design, working with CATIA or similar CAD tools ; Experience in mechanical construction and fabrication would be an advantage ; Fluency in English is mandatory, German language skills are an advantage ; Able to work in an interdisciplinary, multi-national and highly motivated team ; Able to work in Singapore for at least half a year each year (can be split in two 3 month terms) or more, depending on project requirements Please send your application including curriculum vitae, all recent certificates or a grade report card as well as a list of your previous publications (if any) preferably in electronic form to: Stephanie Käfer TU München Lehrstuhl für Elektrische Energiespeichertechnik | Arcisstraße 21 | 80333 München Phone +49 89 289 26967 | Fax +49 89 289 26968 | Email stephanie.kaefer [a] tum[.]de
